Southpark Edges Out Man Pushing Stroller in 10K

June 30, 2008

My brother Jeff (Southpark) and I headed to Sanford, NC Saturday morning for the Scott Dyer Memorial Run…the first (and probably only) official race for us before the Blue Ridge Relay.  And yes, as the headline suggests, Jeff did step it up in the final quarter mile to overtake a guy pushing his kid in a stroller!   This was the same guy we were eyeing (read…mocking) before the start.

The sad part (for me) is Jeff trained a 1/3 as much as I have over the past couple months…and still only finished 2 minutes behind me.  We ran together for the first 5 miles….and posted pretty good times for us…

Mile 1 - 7:32 mm

Mile 2 - 8:04 mm

Mile 3 - 8:32 mm

Mile 4 - 8:28 mm

Mile 5 - 8:40 mm

And then it fell apart for both of us at the six mile mark…oh well.

Training Hard for the Black and Blue …

June 25, 2008

Hard to believe that the Black and Blue Relay Race is less than a month away! Credit unions and Team Little Guy will be representing in the one day, 208 mile bike relay from Grayson Highlands SP in Virginia to Asheville, NC!

Eric “Eman” Gelly & Tom “Major” Heyden, our resident hardcore runners/bikers, will form a two-man team and both ride “centurys” in the race.

Meanwhile, Ed Agnoli, John “Badrad” Radebaugh, Rob Semar of Members Credit Union & yours truly will form another TLG entry. Ed & Rob are longtime bikers … while I’m just trying to get back into shape after a long layoff. Badrad just bought a bike recently and started training, but all his cardiac training from running should serve him well up in the mountains!

CUNA Mutual Group is also fielding a four-person team, so credit unions will have a big presence in the race!

While the bike ride is a one-day event, the team is also gearing up for the Blue Ridge Relay Race on September 5-6. More to come …

(Edit 6/26 to add: the CUNA Mutual Group Team includes Robin Kolvek and Tim Gardner from Georgia, Randy Coleman from South Carolina, and Scott Binder from Florida.)

Austin Conquers the Beantown Beast!

April 22, 2008

(Editor’s note: Team Little Guy member Austin Braithwait, aka “connedbybrehmer”, successfully completed the Boston Marathon on Monday in 3 hours, 53 minutes & 50 seconds. Austin reflects on running in and completing the marathon. Congrats, Austin!)

It felt good to finally exorcise the 4 hr Boston demon … it only took 4 attempts.

I finally actually got myself in decent shape … novel concept! In hind sight I could have opened it up a bit sooner, although my legs really never felt good all day, I just kind of got in a rhythm and tried to feed off the crowd…..low 60’s and sunny; they were in rare form, absolutely tremendous!!!! They really make you feel like you are the star of the show (so long as you right your name on your singlet). I had my name as well as my patient partner Timmy’s name emblazoned across the front, so it generated a ton of support.

You might have noticed that I got a little worried just before heartbreak, I slowed down just a bit because I got a knot in my left quad that I was really worried about it cramping … it never really went away, but the climbs from 17.5 to almost 21 helped give me the confidence it wasn’t going to get worse. I passed a ton of people going up the 3 mile heartbreak section and I can’t tell you how energizing that was … when I got to the top I felt pretty good and literally said out loud while giving myself my best Lance Armstrong to Jan Ulrich internal stare (if that is possible), “all right, let’s see what you’ve got!” I flat out opened it up down the back of heartbreak and at one point looked down at my GPS to a 6:22/mile pace (the back side has a pretty good grade, so I was just letting gravity take over and I just cooperated). I got to the bottom and thought everything seems to be in good working order, “I got this!” From that point on I was passing people at a good clip and my legs finally started to feel stronger as I passed each mile mark. At that point, I really started thinking about achieving a negative split but ran out of time … missed it by 30 lousy seconds.

Based on what I had left and it not being ideal conditions with the heat and sun, I think there is more time I can shave.

Thanks again for your thoughts during the day. It helps provide a little extra incentive knowing there are people out there watching your progress!

Cherry Blossom Recap: Personal Records!!

April 9, 2008

Runners covet personal records…their best time for a distance or special race. The hope of running a new PR is one of the key motivators for runners.

This weekend every Team Little Guy racer set some type of PR at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 miler. Visit http://www.cherryblossom.org/results/2008/men.htm for the official results.

Agnoli : 1:53:08

Ed raced with an injured knee. This was his first 10 mile race so it is his PR but he will shatter this time when he is healthy.

Slacker: 1:41:14

This was John’s first 10 mile race and he is a newer runner. Awesome race!

The Major: 1:20:51

Set a new PR with very limited training. He could go sub 1:10 easy!

BadRad: 1:20:39

BadRad kicked butt! He trained hard and went for it! 1:19:59 next time!

Eman: 1:00:04

Beat Bubba’s 61:03…59:59 next time!

Bubba: 1:25:01

There are many categories of PR’s… Bubba set a new PR for 10 miles now that he is 60 years old.

Now that I have run Cherry Blossom and was fortunate enough to beat dad’s 61:03. I have a much higher level of respect for just how fast Bubba was in his prime! It was awesome to chase that PR at Cherry Blossom with Dad on the course with me.

All the pain and hard work was rewarded when I crossed the finish line…but the highlight of weekend was the “Job Well Done” hug from a proud Bubba at the finish.

Great running guys! Let’s chase some more PR’s!!

Run Little Guy Run!

Cherry Blossom Recap: A Tall Tale of Two Bags

April 9, 2008

Friday, April 4, 2008—The day of departure has finally arrived. The six brave & hardy members of Team Little Guy leave Greensboro heading for Washington, DC. We are leaving from the NC Credit Union League’s office parking lot. I look at the six guys—Eric Gelly—John Radebaugh—Major Tom Hayden—John Slacker—Ed Agnoli—and of course yours truly. Six large men trying to get into one small van. This baby was designed for the pee wee soccer kids—not six foot plus large framed Clydesdales. As settle into the seat I quickly become acquainted with my knee caps. Get the picture. Hayden & Slacker quickly fall asleep. Now this is a fun group!

6:00pm—We arrive at the Marriott on 14th Street in the District. The bellhop smiles as we disembark from the van and waddle into the lobby. Legs seem to reject the notion that it’s time to straighten out. Ouch!

9:00pm—Have you even visited the Adams Morgan neighborhood in Washington? If you haven’t—you should. Very hip place with great restaurants and very hip clubs. Team Little Guy likes this neck of the woods. No better opportunity to share the story of our mission and fundraising activities. Lots and lots of new people to meet. Suddenly all the legs cramps are gone and we are convinced that a little dancing might even be beneficial to loosen the ole sticks up a bit!

12:00 Midnight—Team Little Guy legs are real loose now. Now it is only fair to report that while Eric, John and The Slacker are very good runners, Major Tom & Bubba are by far the best dancers. Marvelous rhythm!

Some time later we determine that our mission is accomplished. We have dutifully spread the word to all that would listen and even to those that wouldn’t. It amazing that to a man Team Little Guy is, at this point in the early am, please that the race is on Sunday and not Saturday!

Saturday morning, April 5th.—I slowly open one eye. The bright sunshine is streaming into the hotel room. I am sharing a room with Eric. I have no idea what time it is. My tummy tells me it’s time for breakfast. The marauding band of Team Little Guy merrymakers has lost a step or two as we shuffle of to the breakfast room. Not to worry for a belly full of scrambled eggs, bagels and gallons of coffee work magic on those hearty souls have all of Saturday to make more new friends.

11:00am—Marriott Crystal City. Packet & number pickup for the race.

The place is packed. Thousands of runners stream in and out of the place. We make it our business to introduce Team Little Guy to as many folks as we can. We deemed the effort to be a complete success.

3:00pm—-Time for a run.

Select members of Team Little Guy decide that a quick 30 minute run down to the Washington Monument would be just what the doctor ordered. The weather was absolutely perfect. We soon notice that the streets of Washington are chock full of people. The Mall is packed with people walking through and near the absolutely gorgeous cherry blossoms. The blossoms are at peak. As we weave our way through the thousands of tourists we notice that we are the only ones who are running. Thousands of folks walking and just us running. Very surrealistic. People just part and offer an opening as we approach. It’s like we were part of the entertainment that day. As I admired the beautiful cherry blossoms I knew that one strong wind and rain would unfortunately end this masterpiece of nature’s finest tapestry. Little did we know that all would change in a mere 12 hours.

8:00pm—Team Little Guy hunkers down to watch the Kansas/ Carolina game. Oops that’s right…..WHAT GAME? Ouch. We check the weather—BAD NEWS—-rain in the forecast for the morning. I immediately know what is needed. I head down to the corner CVS and purchase a $4.00 dollar box of 30 gallon trash bags.

April 6th—5:00am.—-I awake to the sounds of pitter patter rain falling on the hotel window. Eric wakes up—-open one eye and knows the forecast was right on the money.

6:45am Team Little Guy departs the hotel nattily attired in black 30 gallon trash bags. The rain bounces off the bags while the bags keep us warm. Now just imagine—early morning church goers in our nation’s capital drive by six large men wearing trash bags & bare legs. On the way to the Mall we walk right by the White House. If only the President was peeking out a window and spots Team Little Guy—”Laura, I think I might have to reconsider my position on the economy!” I think he might have also alerted the Secret Service!

7:50 am the rain stops and the bags are peeled off. Eric starts with the elite runners and heads into the great unknown of athletic achievement. The rest of us leave a little later.

10:30am—the race has ended. The rain starts falling again. We change into dry clothes and adorn the next trash bag for our walk back to the hotel. Thousands of other runners look at us with envy. They forgot to bring a bag.

The Results: All of the hearty six ran well. New personal records were set for the 10 mile distance. Eric was our fastest at 6:00 minutes a mile. Very impressive.

The ride back to Greensboro was full of tall tales and comments on the many moments of laughter we shared during the prior 48 hours. More important to us is that we spread the word about Team Little Guy’s efforts to raise money to help others. We also bonded closer together to prepare ourselves for the 2008 edition of The Blue Ridge Relay where we will again test our individual and collective mettle against those 208 arduous miles along and over the Blue Ridge mountains.

Run on my friends—-and never lose sight of the fact that we do what we do for others. Thank you ALL very much for your SUPPORT!

Bubba :)

The Cherry Blossom Run: Sights and Sounds from DC

April 7, 2008

The day before running in the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Run, Team Little Guy stretched their legs after five hours in the van. This video captures the thoughts of the team leading up to the 10 mile race on Sunday, April 6th. (Slacker also recaps the perils of riding in a small van with five guys - and makes an “impression” on one woman in the process.) :)

Congratulations to the thousands of runners who participated - more than $1-million was raised by credit unions, CU organizations and individuals! The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation and Team Little Guy were happy to present a check to CMN and run in the race.

The Drive

April 5, 2008

Six little guys in a van…that is pretty normal.  The Cherry Blossom race weekend began with with a 5 hour drive to DC.  Here are some views of how team members were preparing mentally for the 10 mile race in DC.

 The Major

The Major and Slacker should be well rested for the run.

Van Leaves at 12:30 for DC!

April 4, 2008

clinton.jpg

There will be about six TLG members in a Toyota mini-van for the five hour trip to DC and back. I predict there’ll be more funk in there by the end of the weekend than a George Clinton concert!

Safe travels, Team Little Guy! If you run into the team at the Cherry Blossom Run on Sunday, say hi (and stay away from the van …)

Good luck to all the Cherry Blossom runners!!!

Ed’s Sweep Vehicle

April 4, 2008

Ed’s Sweep Vehicle

The type of sweep vehicle used to pick up sloooooow runners is determined by the speed of the runner.

Another Birthday

April 4, 2008

Ed “I want a new knee for my Birthday” Agnoli will also be celebrating a birthday during our trip to DC.  Bib number 18,317 will turn 35 on race day.  Ed has been doing some serious rehab on a bad case of IT Band Syndrome.  I’m impressed that a dude with a bad wheel is talkin smack to the Slacker.  We many have a “Birthday Battle in the Nations Capital” brewing on Sunday.  I think Slacker should jump back in Ed’s corral and the birthday boys can race each other and the sweep bus!  Anyone want to make any wagers??  I’ve got $5 on the sweep bus!

Happy Birthday Ed!
