Good morning all,
Well it is time. This morning at 4:30 AM my official recovery period from the little 10 mile jaunt in DC ended. You guessed it, back on the road getting ready for the Blue Ridge Relay Race. An unfortunate injury to E-Man has put yours truly out of the comfort of the driver’s seat and into the race. So off on the new training plan. Big difference from the plan for the Cherry Blossom Run where my daily runs were adeptly designed to avoid all hills. The new plan has me seeking out the nastiest hills to be found. You can be sure of a couple of things, first dragging this big body up hills, where gravity and candy bars are not your friend is a daunting challenge but second rest assured I know why I am out there and it feels great to get to the top. I am in a unique position of having first hand knowledge about the grants we are funding with this run and first hand images of the faces and people whose lives are changed by credit union generosity.
Since the last BRR we have; put clothing on foster children and given them duffle bags to provide some sort of consistency in their otherwise transient lives, provided snacks to school children whose families are unable to provide food for their children giving them the opportunity to feel nourished and ready to learn just like the rest of their classmates, we have provided an avenue for keeping teens off the streets and out of trouble, we have helped to provide homeless families with permanent housing and gotten them off the streets, we have helped provide medical care for families who would otherwise suffer through some very serious ailments, we have helped abused women and children find safety and security, and helped blind citizens reengage with society and gain a sense of belonging and independence. These are just a few of the issues we have engaged.
I know why I have to get up and get on the road.
When the letters asking for support come out in the next few days, please consider being a Team Little Guy Sponsor. We need all the help we can get to continue representing the cooperative efforts of credit unions in helping make our communities better.
So E-Man, hate to see you laid up brother but here are the keys to the van. I have some work to do.
Thanks for all the support folks. Team Little Guy members – 8 weeks to go. Let’s get busy. Slacker

Very impressed! But I have to say… it’s so time to get rid of that photo… “Slacker the Van Driver” and take a new one of “Slack the Running Man!”
Keep up the good work! Your bad knees and big heart are a great inspiration!!

Slacker: Good luck in your training!
We’ll miss having Eric running in the race, but it’s good that he’ll be driving one of the vans. As you know, that’s a true skill position which takes awesome athleticism mixed with a healthy dose of No-Doz.

Way to step up John. Does this mean that you are no longer the one & only true Slacker? You inspired me to think about running too, but I’m over that now. I didn’t know that e-Man was temporarily sidelined. Hope he gets well soon. Thanks to everyone associated with TLG for all that you do. Now get out there and work up a sweat!

As I down my first twinkie of the morning and lace up my way expensive trendy ridiculous name brand running shoes I am filling with inspiration to support TLG. After reading Slack’s jibberish about awaking at 4:30 am when only the chickens are awake (hey even they have sense enough to sleep to a decent hour) I feel an almost “Rockyesq” type twinge to get out and start on my morning run. Then it hits me – I don’t run. My body is old enough without the stress of the pavement. I have no desire to age my already old over the hill knees. I have grown kind of attached to them over the years and would like to hang on to them the few years I have left before social security. Don’t get me wrong – I give a big shout out to my homeboy Slack for his courage. I just think I am better suited o something safe like water aerobics in the kiddy pool for now. All of this typing has me exhausted. I think I will snuggle back in for a few more z’s before it is time to wake up the chickens:)
